17 - Sash! - Mysterious Times
18.- Shania Twain - When
19.- Robbie Williams - Killing Me (DEBUT)
20.- Smashing Pumpkins - Perfect (DEBUT)

That Robbie Williams song hit home with me, maybe not that much in the long run, but for some days I had "Killing Me" all over my head because of the lyrics, a quiet song, really lovely. And yes, Robbie is another of those artists that used to make good music. At 20, Smashing Pumpkins enter the chart with "Perfect", and for being an alternative band, their album "Adore" sure was very tame and poppy, but not bad at all.

19.- Sash! - Mysterious Times (DEBUT)
20.- Mariah Carey - My All

At 16, PJ Harvey is the guest vocalist of Tricky on the song "Broken Homes", this was her first appearance in the chart, the song is haunting and the best one on the Tricky album "Angels With Dirty Faces". At 18, Madonna enters with one of her best songs "Drowned World/Substitute For Love", to this day it's still weird that this song was chosen to be a single, mind you MTV didn't play the video but whatever. And coming at 19, Sash! with "Mysterious Times"

17 - Semisonic - Closing Time
18.- Spice Girls - Viva Forever
19.- Danza Invisible - Por Ahi Se Va
20.- Brandy & Monica - The Boy Is Mine (DEBUT)

Oh yeah, back in the day, let me tell you, Live were an awesome band that played alternative rock very loud and distorted and with great results... too bad they are a joke nowadays... anyway, here, they were debuting at number 1 with this classic "Heropsychodreamer" a rocking song dealing with gay thematic, really great! Then, much lower, Gloria Estéfan enters with "Oye", second single from her album "Gloria!", this was a really catchy song with a spanish chorus (and a spanish version as well) that was really the highlight of the album for me. At 15, Bush debut with this song that was remixed by Tricky, the song "In A Lonely Place". It is a dark song, slow and long that could be, if not paying attention, heard as a boring song, cause well, the song does not evolve, it just kinda drags, but I like it. Then, here, Dave Matthews Band make their great first appearance in the chart with "Don't Drink The Water", the first song I had heard of them. With Alanis Morissette singing background vocals, this song is raw, powerful and still to this day, my favorite song by them. And the debut at 20 comes by Brandy & Monica.

17 - Portishead - Only You
18.- Spice Girls - Viva Forever
19.- Semisonic - Closing Time (DEBUT)
20.- Eros Ramazzotti - Terra Promessa

So sad to see Tori Amos leaving the chart with that awesome "Spark". Anyway, the replacement was "Closing Time" by Semisonic. I liked the song enough. And I received money from a scholarship or something like that... that in reality was just a few bucks. Anyway, I decided to spend the money in something good like a cd, and so I went with my cousin to buy music. He suggested me to buy Semisonic's cd, but I wasn't sure if I would like it, still my cousin insisted and finally I gave in. The first play was not to my liking, and I wanted to return it jajaja but who would've thought? I LOVE "Feeling Strangely Fine" to this day, it's probably in my top 20 albums of all time. "Closing Time" is great and the cd is full of great songs.

17 - The Corrs - Dreams (DEBUT)
18.- Spice Girls - Viva Forever (DEBUT)
19.- Sarah McLachlan - Adia (DEBUT)
20.- Tori Amos - Spark

This chart marks one of the interesting points in my chart's life. In this same week, 17 out of the 20 songs were sung by females or predominantly female lead vocals, something that has never been repeated, this was woman's week! Anyway, Beth Gibbons and company enter the chart with the desperate and extremely dark song "Half Day Closing" at number two. To this day, I don't know why critics prefer "Dummy" over "Portishead", well, I know, critics don't like dark music. At 5, another debut, it's by 4 The Cause, a group that disappeared as soon as this song was played apprently. It was obviously a cover, but I don't know, there was something about it that really got me, it was cool. At 17, The Corrs debut with a cover of Fleetwood Mac (crappy band covering crappy band) "Dreams". At 18, Spice Girls released this lovely ballad when Geri's had left the group, but she was included here thanks to a fairy. The video was really good, maybe even outstanding, specially being the Spice Girls. And at 19, Sarah McLachlans debuts with another ballad, "Adia", which was thought to be about a lesbian affair. And what happened here?? Tori Amos with "Spark" falls from 6 to 20????? ARGH! Why?? I regret that, but that's the real deal kids.

17 - Eros Ramazzotti - Fantástico Amor
18.- Mousse T feat Hot N Juicy - Horny '98
19.- Undrop - Train
20.- Matchbox 20 - Real World

Ahhh, I remember adoring "When" back when I first heard it on the World Chart Show, it was so much better than the horribble "You're Still The One", but music listeners around the world sometimes don't like what's good. So, I remember singing along to this, and it was much much more pop than the country where she comes from, but it's fine by me.

Undrop no longer exist to my knowledge. They supposedly had some success bbecause one of their songs was used in a tv spot, so they got noticed. "Train" was a great song.

19.- Danza Invisible - Por Ahi Se Va (DEBUT)
20.- Mousse T feat Hot N Juicy - Horny '98 (DEBUT)

Danza Invisible is (or was?) a spanish band. I became aware of their existence, cause the good people at radio here, kind of imported the 40 principales show from Spain, so we were able to listen to cool music (not the lame mexican version they have now). Anyway, they enter the chart at 19 with a song called "Por Ahi Se Va", a rock song. And at 20, Mousse T with "Horny '98".

17 - Meredith Brooks - Watched You Fall
18.- Wes - Alane (DEBUT)
19.- Matchbox 20 - Real World (DEBUT)
20.- Lutricia McNeal - Stranded (DEBUT)

In Europe, the song "Alane" by Wes, became a big hit. During those days, there was something called The Eurochart, compiling info from radio station from different parts of Europe to create it, it was really cool. "Alane" might have been a hit in some countries, not necessarily in all. At 19, Matchbox 20 debut with "Real World" a nice song, but nowhere near as good as "Push". And at 20... Lutricia McNeal!! the song was called "Stranded" and it was also a big hit in Europe, but I highly doubt that people in this part of the world remember or even know who she was or is. And that's fine, other than that song, she never had another hit, thanks for that!

Eros Ramazzotti debuts with what was his first single in Italy more than a decade ago, the song "Terra Promessa", a nice song, nothing out of the ordinary. And at 19, an artist that I can't believe is back, Meredith Brooks with "Watched You Fall", a not that bad song, but really, Meredith?? UGH!

3 debuts this week. The highest one is by Smashing Pumpkins with the first single from their album "Adore". At 19, we see the return of OBK to the chart, with help from Asap to deliver a new version of "Historias De Amor". And finally at 20, this (ambiguosly gay?) duo Modern Talking. Their voices are... too femenine but it's a cool track.

Ahhh, something happened this week for the first time in the chart's life: A double A side single debuted just like that. It was the first of many to come, the All Saints enter with both songs at 19. In time, I kept debuting double songs like this, but most of those were two songs I felt I liked equally, and they both made it. At 18 the italian Nek debuted with his second single in México "Il Tuo Nome". And a little higher, Céline, not happy with her brand new number one, also entered with the french "Cherche Encore" a great song I still like, at number 17. And finally at 14, Live, with a song from their past album, but I just heard it that last week. It was on a videotape a friend of my brother lent us, it was a live performance and I fell for it.

Portishead continued to keep me extremely interested in their music, therefore, "Over" makes a good debut at 8. Goo Goo Dolls also entered with one of the biggest hits in that year, from the movie City Of Angles, "Iris", a great song, particularly the lyrics, so good, even if it wouldn't chart if I make a top 100 songs of history... well, I have made one a couple years ago or something, so I know it wasn't there. Then, Mariah with "My All", a beautiful slow ballad with a very good video. Somehow, it managed to become one of her most obscure singles in my opinion. And finally, at 20, Eros Ramazzotti enters with "Fantástico Amor"
